When I teach ‘rolling offsets,’ I have apprentices measure rise and offset, punch sqrt(rise^2 + offset^2) on a phone calculator to get the true offset, then multiply by 1.414 for 45s before they cut; it sticks better than any chart. Laser meters are great on the big infrastructure jobs everyone mentioned, but I still make them verify with a tape because embeds and rail posts can throw the reading.
